# Time-in-Force Options

Before diving into specific order types, understand the time-in-force options that control how long your order stays active:

| TIF     | Name                | Behavior                                                                                                                                    |
| ------- | ------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **GTC** | Good 'Til Canceled | Stays on the order book until filled or you cancel it. Best for setting price targets you're willing to wait for. |
| **GTD** | Good 'Til Date | Active until a specified date/time (UTC), then auto-cancels if unfilled. Useful for time-bound strategies. |
| **IOC** | Immediate or Cancel | Fills whatever it can immediately at your price or better; cancels the rest. Good for getting partial fills without leaving resting orders. |
| **FOK** | Fill or Kill | Must fill the entire order immediately or cancel completely. No partial fills. Use when you need all-or-nothing execution. |
| **ALO** | Add Liquidity Only | Cancels if it would execute immediately; ensures you're always the maker (earning rebates instead of paying fees). |

## When to Use Each

* **GTC**: Default choice for limit orders when you're patient
* **GTD**: Event-driven trades (e.g., "buy before earnings if price hits X")
* **IOC**: You want immediate execution but won't chase price
* **FOK**: Large orders where partial fills create unwanted exposure
* **ALO**: Market making or when you specifically want maker rebates

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.bullpen.fi/trading/order-types/time-in-force.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
